In 1951, Solomon Asch conducted a series of experiments to study how individuals are influenced by a majority group. Participants were asked to match the length of a line with one of three comparison lines. In each group, only one participant was genuine; the rest were confederates instructed to give incorrect answers in twelve out of eighteen trials. Asch found that a significant minority of participants conformed to the actors' wrong answers, even when the correct answer was obvious. However, the presence of just one confederate giving the correct answer dramatically reduced conformity. Further research has explored factors like group size, task difficulty, and cultural norms on conformity, building upon Asch's foundational work.
